Nero Zampillo (roughly, Black Burst), inspired by Luzi's poem Essere Rondine (To be a Swallow), explores the movements of restlessness and migration of swallows and humans. In contrast to the relentless growth-oriented human restlessness of consumer society, swallows follow natural and cyclical flows. The latter is symbolised through the limited range and equal temperament tuning of the piano, the repetitions, and the structuring of the piece in seasons. The cost of our unsustainable frenzy is felt through the gradual decline of the bird population which is denounced in the piece through the ending, in which one can hear the voice of one lone swallow.
